Interactive Tools for Meditation

There are countless different methods and techniques to practicing meditation and mindfulness. Two of which are very popular interactive methods that are steeped in history and culture. Experiencing labyrinths, and mandalas are beautiful ways to become calm, grounding and centered.

Labyrinths are a meditation tool, a design with many turns with only one way in and out. As early as 430 BC labyrinths were known to have a single way in and out, before that they resembled mazes including dead ends. There are many different styles and sizes from walking (made out of flowers, stones, in gardens), table tops, finger (you would use a finger or pen or small stone to “walk” the path). One way to utilize the labyrinth is to enter with a question, as you walk think of your question, meditate on it. By the time you reach the center you will have your answer. Another way is to enter and meditate as you walk taking deep continuous breaths, you reach calm or enlightenment at the center and as you walk out you are coming back to reality and the present moment. Both techniques are wonderful for clarity and peace of mind.

A mandala is a complex abstract design that is usually circular in form. In fact, “mandala” is a Sanskrit word that means “circle”. Mandalas generally have one identifiable center point, from which emanates an array of symbols, shapes and forms. Mandalas can contain both geometric and organic forms. A mandala is a spiritual and ritual symbol in Hinduism and Buddhism, representing the universe. In common use, “mandala” has become a generic term for any diagram, chart or geometric pattern that represents the cosmos metaphysically or symbolically; a microcosm of the universe. Mandalas can involve sacred geometry, art, and books. An excellent way to utilize the mandala as a meditation tool is to experience it as a coloring book. Mindfully coloring in and participating in one indfulness.

Both of these interactive mediation tools help bring you to the present moment and allow calming energy to flow through you. Try them both and see which best suits your soul.
