Knowingly or Unknowingly
Knowingly or unknowingly we have been influenced by our ancestor’s habits,
unresolved issues, wisdom and world views. These influences can have a
positive effect on us or have a negative effect. They can also limit or
expand our personal growth and expression in the world.
Living with our parents, it is easy to know that we have habits that we can
easily identify as family or tribally related. Maybe you have even said to
yourself ‘I am acting just like my father or mother and I don’t like that.’
Or maybe you say ‘I am acting just like my mother or father and I do like
that.’ Either way you can choose what to do next. Sometimes we are
conscious of our behavior and views and sometimes we are not. Those views
that are more conscious we can often change or strengthen as we live and
our soul grows.
Opening to Support
Friends, therapists and other support people can help us be more conscious
of those ways that we are not fully aware of. Indeed our souls lead us to
experiences that bring these unconscious behaviors to visibility. We can
then decide to change our behaviors or keep them. Experiences of changing
behavior can be painful. Habits can be really strong. Have you ever found
yourself doing something that is so familiar and yet you know that it takes
you to a place that is not helpful?
Self Awareness Can Help Us
Self awareness and practices like mindfulness help us in this effort to
grow. Habits can be the result of decisions we made earlier in our lives
that came from our past experiences or experiences of our ancestors or
family members. An example of not being self aware would be when we are
listening to a person and multitasking at the same time thus not being
fully present. An example of being self aware would be when you are eating
you take your time and really taste the food.
These negative habits especially have an effect on us if there are
emotional issues that are unresolved by our Ancestors. We may not be aware
of issues that can go back many generations and end up exerting a pressure
on us. The discomfort of the pressure may motivate us to work at resolving
those issues. If these issues are left unresolved then they are passed on
to our children in the same manner that they were passed on to us.
Religious and cultural beliefs are other ways in which Ancestral beliefs
get passed on at a more tribal level.
Two Stories for You
One client told of how she knew that she needed to go to the Ancestral
Clearing group session but did not know why. A few weeks after the session,
she reported that she had felt a major shift in herself. She did not know
what had shifted but she felt a lot lighter and more energetic. We don’t
always need to know what has shifted in order to receive benefit.
Another client did some Ancestral work and reported that she felt a shift
in energy that turned out to be judgment she had toward her father. After
that shift she felt closer to her father-in-spirit. She found a forgiveness
in herself in accepting his humanity. She was able to feel his presence
when she was dancing, laughing or feeling empathy for others, those being
strong aspects of her father’s personality.
You Are the Center of Your Universe
“Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” – Gandhi You can examine
and change the world within yourself and that change radiates out from you
to influence the world around you. As you become more aware of yourself
within and you work through issues and reactions, you become more present
in the moment. Clearing Ancestral issues helps you live in the now.
More Techniques to Help with Ancestral Release
Many forms of self awareness are available to help. In addition to
Mindfulness there are Meditation
(http://commongroundmeditation.org/intro-to-meditation/), Inquiry, Therapy,
Energy Work and other forms to release Ancestral patterns. Once you
discover something about yourself that arises from within, you can start by
merely being present with it with no self-judgment. If self-judgment
arises then be present with that. If shame arises be present with that. If
self-judgment and shame persist, that is an opportunity to continue
healing and growing.
Positive Ancestral Influence
In some cultures, for example, African tribal culture and ancient Hawaiian
culture, ancestors are included in daily ritual and life, emphasizing that
they are still living among us in a transformed way. This interaction with
the ancestors brings support and wisdom to one’s daily life. In African
culture there are rituals to Ancestralize the dead to bring them into
relationship with the living (http://malidoma.com/main/Ancestralization/).
This represents a way in which Ancestral energy is brought into positive
influence in one’s daily life.
